Tim Tebow’s First NFL Trading Card

Tim Tebow Panini 2010 Prestige Football

As NFL experts speculated where college football’s most heralded player, former University of Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow would be selected in the 2010 NFL Draft in New York City, Panini America (www.paniniamerica.net), a subsidiary of The Panini Group, the leading global publisher of sports and entertainment collectables and an NFL/NFLPA licensee was prepared to print Tebow’s card coming out of the first round on Thursday night.

The first official NFL Rookie Card went into production hours after Tebow was drafted and is set to arrive in stores by mid May in packs of Panini’s 2010 Prestige Football. The card will be one of the most coveted trading cards the industry and collectors have seen in years. Panini will also produce a limited edition version of Tebow’s Rookie Card featuring a shot from Draft night that will also be included in packs of 2010 Prestige Football.

“Being the special player and public figure that he is, Tebow being drafted in the first round makes him the bona fide No. 1 guy out of the gate, more collectible than Sam Bradford,” says Scott Prusha, Panini America’s marketing director. “People didn’t know where he was going to land and he landed in the first round on a very collectible team as the second quarterback taken. He’s going to be a collecting superstar.”

As the leading global publisher of sports and entertainment collectables, Panini has license agreements with three of the major U.S. sports, including the NFL/NFLPA, NHL/NHLPA and an Exclusive Trading Card and Sticker Partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA). Panini’s other partnerships include an exclusive license with FIFA for the 2010 and 2014 World Cup, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and with four-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. Panini also has a successful collectibles business with consumer brands including DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, Disney’s Toy Story 3, Hannah Montana and High School Musical, and Warner Brothers’ Harry Potter.

Giveaway Time

I am going to do this giveaway a little different…..

Since starting boxbusters.net over a year ago, I have given away hundreds of cards and paid to ship those cards to winners from various contests.  I have spent  my own money doing so and in the process have met some pretty cool people, made some trading buddies and all in all had a damn good time. All together I have given away cards in 30 states and the United Kingdom. Pretty crazy if you think about it…. so to celebrate I have decided to have another giveaway. This time though, there is a catch. You have to live in one of the following states to qualify:

Alabama
Arkansas
Alaska
Delaware
Indiana
Kentucky
Tennessee
Louisiana
Maine
Massachusetts
Michigan
Montana
New Hampshire
New Jersey
Rhode Island
South Carolina
South Dakota
Vermont
West Virgina
Wyoming

Why these States?  Pretty simple….these are the 20 States I have not shipped any cards to – YET. See, I have a simple goal – I’d like to ship cards to every state in the U.S. and then some. I have a very limited collection so that leaves me with a TON of cards to get rid of, not to mention the sponsored product I receive from time to time.

So here’s SOME of the cards up for grabs:

•  “Starter Set” of 2008 Donruss Threads Football.

•  “Starter Set” of 2009 Tristar Obak and about 10 2009 Tristar Prospect cards including the Obak and sketch versions of Stephen Strasburg.

•  “Starter Set” of 2009 Tristar TNA Impact

•  2009 Upper Deck Series One Triple Swatch #50/50 Rafael Furcal

•  2 2008 Upper Deck X AUTO’s : Josh Newman & Callix Crabbe

•  2008 Upper Deck Timeline A.J. Griffin AUTO

Here’s how this giveaway will work.  Notice I said SOME of what is up for grabs above.  I have 4 or 5 boxes I am going to fill with the above cards as well as random “common” or base cards from various busts since I have started boxbusters. All the boxes will contain something OTHER than just base cards(an auto or jersey card maybe even one not listed above) however there will be one DUMMY box.  This box will have a stunning collection of random stuff – nothing special just plain old cards. Sound like fun? All you have to do to enter is live in one of the states listed above and leave a comment.  I will take entries until 4/22.

Also stay tuned for more giveaways, including a  sponsored giveaway from fathead/smile.ly

Fathead

O.K. how many of you collectors out there have one or more Fatheads? I have posted about them before, back when I first started writing and still have an interest in their product. I have a finished basement and in the future I am planning on adding a bar. Of course, I will HAVE to decorate with Sports Memorabilia and collectibles and this is where the Fathead comes in. I was concerned about the sizes of the Fatheads but then I was contacted about their Fathead Jr line. These Fatheads are the same just about half the size of the original Fatheads. PERFECT for a bar area like I have planned. So the good folks at Fathead/Smile.ly have offered to send me a Fathead Jr to try out. If you like Fatheads and FREE STUFF – head over to http://fathead.com/sweepstakes/mlb and sign up for your chance to win a FREE FATHEAD JR. Yankees Art Unveiled

World Series Celebration artist Opie Otterstad

World Series Celebration artist Opie Otterstad

After nearly a decade of waiting for the championship to return home, the 2009 Yankee’s clinched their 27th World Series. It is only fitting that a legendary victory such as this one be immortalized by famed seven-time World Series Celebration artist Opie Otterstad.  On Saturday, April 17, 2010, Otterstad will unveil his Official World Series Victory Piece at Pop International Galleries, in SoHo (473 West Broadway).   For more information, click here for details.

In what has become a tradition of its own, the World Series victory art piece transports fans back to the glorious moment when a historic team clinches its destiny. For the past seven years, Major League Baseball fans have looked to legendary sports artist Opie Otterstad to create spectacular panoramic paintings capturing these wins. Known for narrating each winning team’s history on canvas, Otterstad celebrates not only the winning moment but often the path that led the team there. With Otterstad painting in Pinstripes, this piece will preserve the 2009 World Series story for all-time.  A limited quantity of 209 hand-signed and numbered pieces, measuring 24”x36”, are available for $1650 each.

Showing alongside Otterstad, renowned sports artist, Stephen Holland will also debut three reverent portraits of the Yankee’s most celebrated players of our generation. New York’s hometown hero Derek Jeter, beloved closer Mariano Rivera and the great Alex Rodriguez will all come to life with the strokes of Holland’s mastery. His intense, gritty style has captured illustrious sports figures with an honesty and passion missed by other mediums.

Throughout time artists have documented profound moments in history with paintings; still today, there is an opportunity to take a snap shot of these shared continuums of epic scale even in sports. Bringing the joy of triumph and success to life in a way that neither a ring nor trophy can do, these phenomenal victory pieces and portraits will fill Pop International Galleries to memorialize America’s team and baseball. This historic exhibit will highlight some of the Yankee’s most extraordinary and significant moments, as well as, the time-honored traditions of baseball through a celebration of world-class art.

Pop International Galleries, being both a legendary New York gallery and the premier dealers of Pop Art in the United States, make it the perfect location for this show. “The Yankees and their iconic players as painted by Opie and Holland are just as much a part of ‘popular culture art’ as Wahol’s Monroe,” says co-owner Rick Rounick.

This exhibit celebrates the return of the World Series championship back where it belongs — in New York City.  Whether you attended the game in person, were watching on TV, are a life-long Yankees’ fan, are simply a lover of sports, or are a collector of historic sports moments, experience this one-of-a-kind art show first-hand. Take home a true piece of history to add to your collection or a print capturing the record 27th World Series championship win of the world’s most successful squads.

Upper Deck Unable to Renew License with NFL

A formal press release will be coming in the next few days but word from Upper Deck sources is they were unable to renew their football card license with NFL Properties for the 2010 NFL season.  Richard McWilliam, Upper Deck founder and CEO was quoted as saying: “Over the past year, Upper Deck has attempted to negotiate a new licensing deal with NFL Properties. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were not able to reach agreeable terms, and therefore will not be issuing any NFL Properties-licensed trading cards for the 2010 season. Upper Deck will continue to focus on its exclusive license agreement with the Collegiate Licensing Company and co-exclusive agreements with NHL Enterprises and the NHL Players’ Association, as well as its multiple entertainment licenses.”

Guest Bust: 2009 Goodwin Champions

Hey all it’s Todd back with another box break and review, this time we’re going to take a look at the 2009 release of Upper Deck’s Goodwin Champions. I choose this one for the decent price from my LCS and two I like the fact that it has more than just baseball champions in it. Hobby boxes consist of 20 packs with five cards each. The base cards have a nice non-glossy front and back with a white border and varying backgrounds. In my opinion the best background belongs to Ichiro with the Japanese flag flying in the back. Other backgrounds include clouds, the American flag and solid colors.

2009 Goodwin Champions

As you can see Michael Jordan, Alexander Ovechkin, Buffalo Bill Cody and Donovan Bailey are examples of the other champions here. There are short print and super short print cards as well. I received six of the short print and one super short print in my box. Upper Deck also has mini cards in this set of three different varieties: regular, Gypsy Queen black border and foil. I got five of the Gypsy Queen and one foil in my box which I believe is the normal average.

2009 Goodwin Champions

2009 Goodwin Champions "Hits"

Now on to the hits I got. You get three hits per box that can range from game used jerseys to autographs, original Goodwin cards or entomology or horse hair redemptions. I, unfortunately, got the standard two jerseys and one autograph. The jerseys are a grey swatch from Brad Hawpe and a white swatch of Hiroki Kuroda. Nice cards but nothing special. The autograph I pulled is of marathon runner Bill Rogers, who after looking up on Wikipedia, I discovered is the former American record holder in the marathon and won the Boston and New York marathons twice each back in the 1970s. This does hold to the champions part of the box but wasn’t the greatest card to get. Still it’s a nice on card autograph so no huge complaints. Overall the box wasn’t a great one and I’ve already sent some of the cards off to a fellow blogger to help him complete his set but for the price I got it was a fun break. Thanks again to Will for letting me guest blog a bit and I’ll hopefully be back soon with some packs I got off e-bay.

Thank-you Todd aka darkship17.  Remember, if you would like to be a guest author like darkship17, simply drop me a line – I am always on the lookout for guest authors!
